Coffee - Honduras La Paz (Honey)

Tastes like:

Tangelo / Honey / Dulce de Leche

For the 2nd year in a row, we are elated to bring back this Woodcat exclusive microlot in partnership with coffee farmer Lilian Marlen Argueta Catracha Coffee. This year, only five bags were harvested on Lilian's small four acre farm and we are excited to share such a treat with you.

Just like last year, Lilian's crop has again been thoughtfully honey processed, resulting in a coffee with a juicy feel and deep sweetness. Up front we taste a bright, ripe tangelo zest that lifts into a rich & creamy body, reminiscent of Dulce de Leche. It makes for a complex yet inviting cup. To emphasize its natural sugars, careful attention has been given to the roast profile of this coffee.

Both Lilian and Catracha work hard to improve the quality and economic viability of specialty coffee farming in the Santa Elena region of La Paz, Honduras. Catracha works directly with coffee producers to help them obtain a price well above fair trade, and as a result, invest in their own farms and improve their overall quality of life. Because of this, Lilian has been able to purchase her own micro mill for processing her own coffee before delivery to Catracha for export.

So why does this coffee cost a few bucks more? Well, in addition to the premium we paid (which goes directly to Lilian) we are charging an additional $2 at retail to be given directly to Catracha for what they are calling Third Payment. Traditionally, coffee producers are paid only once at the time of export, but Catracha uses a better system where farmers are paid a portion of the projected sale price at the time of harvest (First Payment) and then again when the coffee is exported (Second Payment).

The Third Payment from each bag sold will be divided three ways:
1. an emergency medical fund for producers working with Catracha;
2. increased wages for pickers hired to pick the coffee at harvest;
3. an additional payment going directly to Lilian, the producer.

We are supremely honored to share this very special coffee with you now and hopefully for many more harvests to come!
